Ink and Toner FAQ

1. How do I know which cartridge to buy?

You can search for your ink or toner cartridge on the Quill Ink and Toner Finder page. Have the following information handy:

  • Printer model number (located on the printer)
  • OR
  • Cartridge number (located on the cartridge)

You will be able to find your cartridge if you have either of these two pieces of information.

2. How many pages can I print with each cartridge?

Yield information is available for each cartridge. It tells you approximately how many pages you can print at 5% coverage. 5% coverage is defined as a double spaced business letter. Keep in mind, images, photos and charts will use more ink or toner than plain text.

3. What does High Yield Cartridge mean?

Cartridges contain more ink or toner. The purchase price is more than a standard cartridge, but the cost per page to print is less than a standard cartridge. This saves you time and money. For example:

Yield Price per cartridge Cost per page (cpp) High yield savings CPP
C4127X HP print cartridge (high yield) 10,000 $128.99 $0.013 22%
C4127A HP print cartridge (standard yield) 6,000 $98.99 $0.016

4. How long can I store a cartridge?

Storage life can vary by manufacturer. Also, the storage conditions will affect the shelf life. If the package is sealed in the original packaging and stored in a cool, dry space, you can expect an ink cartridge to last about 12-24 months. If the package is opened, the shelf life is reduced to 3-6 months. Toner cartridges typically have a longer shelf life.

5. Is it harmful to completely run out of ink before replacing a cartridge?

If you run your cartridge dry, your inkjet print heads can overheat and become unuseable. Also nozzles can dry up and cause damage to the machine. We recommend replacing the cartridge when there is a little ink left.

6. How can I save on ink and toner for my printer?

There are many ways to save money. Buying high yield cartridges or multipacks can save you money. You can also conserve your ink or toner usage by printing your drafts in economy mode. The pages will print a little bit lighter, but you'll get more pages printed per cartridge. And don't print drafts in color. Always print drafts by using your black cartridge. It is cheaper to replace than a color cartridge.

7. How can I recycle my ink and toner cartridges?

Most ink cartridges come with prepaid return envelopes packaged with the cartridge. Use that envelope to mail the cartridge back to the manufacturer or to Quill. Toner cartridges can be returned through several options. Click here for details.
